Yesterday was a big day for Apple fanboys. Steve Jobs, although a bit gaunt, returned to the stage to present the company’s newest iPod options and the upgraded iTunes 9.0 with Genius matching technology built into the App Store. However the biggest announcement (IMHO) was actually about the smallest product.
The new iPod Nano now has the ability to record video. It is able to record video at VGA 640 X 480 with a starting price tag of $149. While phones such as the one that recorded the dispute between Trooper Daniel Martin and Paramedic Maurice White are already VGA capable, what is indeed new is the fact that it is in a device that isn’t commonly regulated in policies by First Responder Agencies.
While I will readily admit that I fully expected a camera to come housed in the new iPod Touch and that did not happen… its really only a matter of time before it does. Look at your agency policies and ask yourself, are you covered by your current policy with this technological advancement?
Yes, an MP3 player that can record video is indeed a game changer for both Citizen Journalism as well as Agencies dealing with Responders who have now been empowered with video… in the form of an iPod.
