Social Media Policies Are A Best Practice For Emergency Services

Posted by at 28 April, 2010, 9:00 am

The question “Do I Need A Social Media Policy?” is one that more and more Emergency Service Agencies are asking. Roberta Jackson answers it in the May 2010 edition of Best Practices For Emergency Services.

The simple answer is yes… in fact I advise that you must have one!
-Roberta Jackson, Best Practices For Emergency Services May 2010 Vol. 13 No. 5

The article includes the views here at PIOSocialMediaTraining.com, as expressed by Dave Konig, in that there are two key elements to every Social Media Policy:

  • The purpose of the policy to address the role of the agency in Social Media
  • Providing both permissions and prohibitions from an agency point of view to their providers

We have written a number of blog posts on this very subject, noted the 5 Vital Components of a Social Media Policy, briefly cover it in our free e-mail bootcamp, and have published a Social Media Policy Guide to help you along your path. One of the reasons we devote so much time and energy to the topic of Social Media Policies is because they are THAT important.

So, have we convinced you to start setting a Social Media Policy for your agency yet? If not, then why not?

Facebook Bids Farewell To Fandom

Posted by at 22 April, 2010, 12:01 am

Facebook has made quite a few announcements regarding changes to their site layout and the way their users interact with the content.

The biggest change is they are bidding farewell to the term Fans for Facebook Pages and have replaced it with Like. Facebook had originally been considered progressively aware enough when they used the term Fan as opposed to Twitter‘s use of the term Follower when creating page functionality. Now users who once were perhaps Fans of a page, such as the PIOSocialMediaTraining.com page on Facebook, have been converted to having Like it.

According to a post on their blog, Facebook is partnering with websites across the internet to integrate the Like feature on their sites natively. In addition, they are integrating Activity Streams for sites like CNN where you can see news stories your friends Like and also integrated Recommendations that are again being based on the preferences and actions of your friends. Facebook is quick to point out that your personal information is NOT shared with these third party sites that they are partnering with.

So what does this mean for you and your agency’s Social Media efforts on Facebook? From initial information and appearances your calls for your community to become “Fans” needs to be changed to asking them to…

While I fully anticipate versions of the Activity Feed and Recommendations to be available as widgets for independent publishers shortly after the conclusion of the developer f8 conference, how these changes and new features will affect current Social Media best practices is still to be determined.

I was mistaken. The existence of these widgets has already been announced

Seesmic: The Ultimate Twitter App For Droids

Posted by at 14 April, 2010, 9:00 am

One of the driving forces behind my investment in a smart phone was none other than Twitter. I’ve always seen value in the service, but I never felt as though I was getting ALL of the potential value because I was stuck with a clunky Nextel i560. Now with my Droid, I’ve been able to finally experience the full power of Twitter.

All I can say is wow. Now I know what ALL of the buzz has been about.

But my experience isn’t just about the actual Twitter service. For that matter any experience on the internet is owed to both the service and the application used to gain access to it. I think my personal Twitter revolution is owed largely in part to the Seesmic Twitter app for Droid that I’ve recently started using.

Before Seesmic, I was using the popular Twidroid application. I even paid for the full version because I wanted to be able to manage multiple accounts ( my personal @DavidKonig and the @PIOSMTraining account to name two) and I wanted to be able to save searches.

Seesmic is really a great application with a variety of features and choices. You can edit your notification settings (all Tweets, Mentions, or Direct Messages), your refresh rates (5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc), and of course your notification tone.

The display is a typical Twitter timeline that you unfortunately can’t customize with colors, but it features hot key filters at the top for @ Replies, Private Messages, and your own profile. Seesmic will also allow you to save searches for quick one push searches of either hashtags or locations. I found this to be an incredibly valuable feature, especially when I was at a conference that used a hashtag.

But what I really enjoy about Seesmic is that it integrates seamlessly into the Share feature of the Droid. This allows you to share not just text but also photos through your choice of Twitter photo sites and making distribution of those scene photos very very easy.

Even though Twitter‘s recent purchase of Tweetie signals the service itself is entering into the app market, I still think that for Droid users the Seesmic application is the most powerful choice with the best price… free.

You can download the Seesmic App through the Android Marketplace

How Live Events Improve Your Social Media

Posted by at 12 April, 2010, 9:00 am

Social Media provides benefits and opportunities both online and in the offline world. While there is a definite opportunity for Social Media to help promote already existing conferences and events, it also provides the opportunity to initiate gatherings on its own.

While there are multiple opportunities for “Meet-ups” and “Tweet-ups” during live gatherings already planned, you may be asking yourself just what benefit is there in attending these live events (such as Foursquare Day (4/16)) for you and your organization?

5 Reasons Live Events Improve Your Online Social Media

The BeerHer Table

Here are 5 ways that attending or hosting live events can improve the effectiveness of your online Social Media:

  • Create New Relationships – One of the biggest challenges to overcome about creating Social Media is letting people know that you are creating Social Media. What better place to do this than in person with other Social Media Creators and, more importantly, Social Media Consumers
  • Expand Existing Relationships – As much as you may think you know someone from their online postings, chances are that you don’t know all there is about them to know. On a similar note, chances are that your community doesn’t necessarily know all there is for them to know about your organization. A live event is a great opportunity to expand both your knowledge base as well as theirs
  • Deepen the Conversation – While Social Media is a great platform for conversation, an in person meeting can help deepen those conversations and may provide you an opportunity to spark new ones
  • Build Trust – Since most agencies will opt for the agency insignia or logo, a live event gives you the opportunity to reveal the face/faces behind the agency which will help build trust amongst your community in your message
  • Provides You With Content – You should definitely use the opportunity of a live event to gather content for your Social Media Presence. Photos and a blog post summarizing the event and highlighting other members of your community who you met at the event is a great way to engage others

Live events are another tool in the toolbox to help enhance and improve your Social Media.
